Tornado Steak House

Tornado has been Madison’s old-school supper club for 30-plus years — a low-lit, leather-booth dining room a block off the Capitol Square, with a menu built on dry-aged steaks, relish trays, brandy old fashioneds, and a wine list deeper than the room implies. For milestone birthdays where the meal itself is the event — a 50th, a retirement-plus-birthday, an out-of-town family gathering — Tornado is consistently the recommendation that everyone over 40 in Madison agrees on.

The Corral room downstairs functions as the private dining space and live-music room, available for buyouts for groups roughly in the 20 to 40 range. Reservations are accepted up to two months in advance and special-occasion bookings get a coordinator’s attention on menu pre-selection and timing. There are no posted “party packages” — this is à la carte ordering with optional pre-fix arrangements coordinated through the events contact. Bring your own cake (a cutting fee applies) or rely on the kitchen’s classic dessert list. Book at least four to six weeks ahead for Friday or Saturday night.
