The Mad Potter

The Mad Potter has been the Tates Creek Center paint-your-own-pottery studio since 1998 and remains the calmer, quieter alternative to the trampoline-park birthday playbook. Guests pick a piece of bisqueware — mugs, bowls, banks, figurines, plates — paint it during a 90-minute session, and the studio handles glazing and kiln-firing for pickup roughly a week later. Glass fusing is also available for older kids and adults.

Birthday parties book the studio’s communal tables with a reserved area, and packages typically include the studio fee, a piece-cost minimum per guest, and a host who walks kids through paint techniques and stencils. There’s no on-site food, but the studio is BYO-cake-and-snacks (no red drinks, for obvious reasons), and parents typically pre-order pizza for delivery. Group sizes work well from 6 to 20 painters; beyond that the room gets crowded. The vibe is genuinely relaxed — a strong fit for craft-loving 6 to 12-year-olds and for adult sip-and-paint groups during evening hours.
